The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) will cover all eye exams for children ages 18 and under and seniors 65 and over. This includes one comprehensive exam, a partial examination, and one diagnostic procedure per year. Only medically necessary exams are paid for patients ages 19 to 64. To clarify, routine comprehensive eye examinations for this group are not covered under AHCIP.

Types of Medically Necessary Treatments and Exams Covered by AHCIP

AHCIP provides full coverage for medically necessary visits to Iconic Eye Care in Edmonton, AB. These vision concerns include:

  • Assessment and removal of a foreign body
  • Pink or red-eye, infections of the eye or eyelid, sudden vision loss, abrasions or pain
  • Pre-and post-operative surgical care
  • Retinal exam and retinal imaging for diabetic patients
  • Treatment and monitoring of chronic eye diseases such as uveitis, macular degeneration and glaucoma

Keep in mind, routine eye care, such as prescriptions for corrective lenses and fittings, are not considered eligible services for patients ages 19 to 64. These patients may still get the coverage they need under an employer-sponsored or personal health care plan. Medically necessary contact lens fittings for patients with the corneal disease may be eligible for extended coverage with many employee-benefit insurances.

Older adults with low–moderate incomes may receive some benefits under the Dental and Optical Assistance for Seniors Program.

In particular, our office features a kids’ playroom to allow the children to enjoy themselves and feel at home in our office prior to their examination or while parents attend the clinic for their eye care services and needs. For residents of Edmonton, AB, we invite you to book an appointment with our optometrist today to experience superior eye care that’s tailored uniquely for you.

Retinal Photography and Imaging (OCT)

We utilize optical coherence tomography to get a more insightful view of your eyes. A comprehensive eye exam at Iconic Eye Care isn’t complete without retinal imaging. Retinal imaging allows our optometrist to look for signs of retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma, among others.
The retina is responsible for the transmission of light signals from the eye to the brain. Retinal photography allows our optometrist to determine the health of your retina.

Non-Contact Tonometry

Measurement of intraocular pressure (or the pressure inside your eye) is essential in the determination of whether you have glaucoma or are at risk of developing the same. Tonometry is the name given to this diagnostic test or measurement.

Here at Iconic Eye Care, we utilize non-contact tonometry when you come in for your comprehensive eye exam or glaucoma screening. We rely on innovative technology that uses a puff of air to determine intraocular pressure.

Non-contact tonometry is safe and comfortable, and usually over within a couple of minutes. Unlike traditional tonometry, you don’t require numbing medicine for non-contact tonometry.

Visual Field Testing

Visual field testing involves measurement of your central and peripheral vision, to determine visual acuity. We have automated our visual field testing for accuracy and precision, resulting in faster diagnosis and, subsequently, speedier treatment.

Give Iconic Eye Care a call today if you’d like to receive your comprehensive eye examination in an office that prioritizes patient well-being, and uses technology to ensure efficiency and convenience.
